It is a great nesting material and fire tinder. It catches on fire easily using a ferrocerium rod or firesteel to ignite it. You can start your fire with the jute rope two ways by using either the char rope or the firesteel. Char Rope: It is made of ¼ inch, 100% solid braid cotton. It is tightly braided so it won't unravel. It can be cut into any length that you need to quickly start a hot ember to start your fire using a jute bird's nest. Ferrocerium Rod or Firesteel: This "tiny but mighty" firesteel can create 5500 F (3000 C) sparks that will start a fire in the toughest conditions. It has a short and bright lanyard on one end attached with a red tape. This will also make the ferro rod visible. Since it is small, it can easily be lost if you accidentally drop it without the bright red tape and lanyard. By inserting your ring finger up to the joint closest to the tip of your finger then twisting the lanyard, it will give you a much better hold on the end of the ferro rod when you strike it. Please see picture. You can use the ferrocerium rod to ignite the unraveled, fluffed-up jute rope or any fine tinder that is flammable. Utility Blade: The spine of the Hunter knife does not have a sharp 90-degree angle. Don't use the blade of the knife but instead use this tough utility blade to strike the "tiny but mighty" ferro rod. This utility blade come with a handmade sheath or cover. Use the cover when using the blade to strike the ferro rod so as not to cut yourself in the process. Please see picture. The unsharpened edges of the utility blade have sharp 90-degree angle so use those and not the sharpened edge when striking the ferro rod so that you can use the sharp edge for more precise, delicate type of cutting if needed.Aluminum Foil: Just in case the ground is wet, cover the ground with the aluminum foil before you start your fire. You can also use it as a big reflective signal in an emergency or use it to reflect the heat from your fire.Mirror: It can be used as a signal in an emergency.
