Wood's Hibernia coppers, those halfpence and farthings made under British Royal patent for use in Ireland during the 1722-1724 period, created an immediate controversy pitting the British government against the Irish Patriots. Particular attention is paid to the fabrication of the dies used to strike the coins as well as the preparation of the planchets on which they were struck. He has identified a total of 57 different farthing varieties and 228 different halfpence varieties, and prepared descriptions and pictures of each, often in multiple die states. Aggregate production quantities are estimated and rarities deduced for each variety. Their relationship to the American Colonies is explored, as well as their claim to being within the corpus of American Colonial Coins.
