Description: Followers of the Trail: Jewish Working-Class Radicals in American by David Leviatin This book contains a history of Jewish workers who immigrated to New York between 1880-1925 and were considered political “radicals” for their generation. Leviatin did extensive interviews and photographed them as they recollected many decades of their lives. These included their early times in Russia, their Jewish cultural practices, and then political leanings as this changed during and after World War II, and a few decades later. They became known to each other as “Followers” who time spent together in founding a worker’s camp in the style of country living and as a community. Mr. Leviatin develops these stories in long chapters with these titles: 1) The Followers of the Trail; 2) Europe; 3) America; 4) A Shtetl on a Hill with perspectives of these aging Jewish people on their lives and political thinking. Throughout are occasional B&W photos. Interviews and conversations with several people present were recorded in 1980. They are sometimes quoted verbatim while other parts of this history are a combination of the patterns or trends pf the subjects with conclusions written by Leviatin. Notes and a bibliography are included. An appendix records some photos of the advertisements used for the facilities where they met. Published by Yale University in 1989. 298 pages. 8 ½” X 9 ½”. This hardback book is in like new condition as is the dust jacket. There is an inscription to a family, presumably by the author, on the title page.
