Description: Rare Original British Brown Bess India Pattern Socket Bayonet made by John Salter Company of Strand London. Bayonet measures 21.75" overall with the triangular blade measuring 18". Inside socket diameter on the back end, .950" with the front of the inside of socket measuring .920". The ricasso area of the blade shows a crown over what looks like a "19", (post 1798 India) below that you can see the manufacturer name, "SALTER" (some fading), below that shows what looks like "1144", but the "1's" look more like a cartouche. The right side elbow is stamped, "3656 V". The opposite side shows either a two digit number or two letters. The left side of the socket front shows light markings that look like, "XIVN" The "N" is backwards. Very good condition showing a brown age patina and darker spots with original bright finish showing through. An interesting piece that warrants further research.
