It represented the Last Year of the 50-Year, Indian Head Penny series; and the First Year, of the 50-Year Lincoln Wheat Penny series. The U.S. Mint overlapped the two 50-Year series, and made both an Indian Head Penny, and a Lincoln Wheat Penny in 1909. In addition, The San Francisco Mint had just opened the year before, so there were now, Two different versions of each Cent- (Plain- or no Mint Mark for Philadelphia; and the S Mint Mark for San Francisco). Three sets of Proof Coins were also made in Philadelphia: One of the 1909 Indian Head Cent; one of the 1909 V.D.B. Lincoln Wheat Cent; and, one of the 1909 Plain (no V.D.B.), Lincoln Wheat Cent. Proof Coins are specially made, and are only sold to Collectors, for a Premium. They are Not released into Circulation. The V.D.B. stands for Victor D. Brenner, the Designer of the Lincoln Wheat Cent. Production was halted Mid-Year, in 1909, amidst protests, and Mr. Brenner's Initials were removed. That created Two versions of each Lincoln Wheat Cent- for both Philadelphia and San Francisco. Are you losing count yet? Finally, there was a known Error Variety from San Francisco that went into circulation- the 1909 S over Horizontal S. That makes 10 Different Varieties of 1909 One Cent (U.S. Penny) to keep track of. **Victor D. Brenner's Initials were later added back to the One Cent in 1918, out of Respect. They were stamped into the Lower Bust on the Front, as opposed to Raised Letters on the Back, like the original. All of this 'Change-Over-Confusion,' resulted in 1909 Pennies (of All types) having Very Low, to Extremely Low, Mintage Quantities! (Super Rare Coin)Three of them are Key Dates: The 1909 S Indian Head (309,000 made); The 1909 S VDB (484,000 made); and The 1909 S (1.8 Million made). The Official ANA Grading Standards Book (Whitman) defines the Choice Fine grade as: “Light to moderate even wear. All major features are sharp. Headdress shows considerable flatness. Nearly half the details still show in hair and on ribbon. Head is slightly worn but bold. Balance of hair is distinct. Shoulder is quite flat. Leaves and bow are almost fully detailed.” *Please do grade for yourself using the pictures. Please hit “Contact Seller” at the Top with any serious inquiries or comments. I watched Indian Heads go from face value, $.01 to $10.00 in 30 years. That’s 33% per year- Steady. “Cent doesn’t have to be a Four-Letter-Word. One can say Penny instead.” –UpsideDow ★★★★★ Most Coins are listed in Two Store Categories each- by Date and Grade, so you can search either way.
