Description: 1891 Famous Japanese Peony Art Matsui Kichisuke Postcard This postcard should excite you if you are a student of Japanese art from the Meiji Period and love flowers. It is dated February 27, Meiji 25 (1892), and was sent to 冨山柴人 (Toyama Shibahito) in Kobe, the author and translator of the "Russo-Turkish War Records" (露土戦争記), published in 1878 (Meiji 11). The sender of this New Year's greeting is Matsui Kichisuke (松井吉助). The postmark shows this card was sent from Shimanouchi, Osaka (島之内, 大阪), where he maintained a garden nursery and grew his famous peonies. These peonies are known as "Kichisuke Peonies," referring to the specific variety or style of peonies that Matsui Kichisuke was famous for cultivating. His flowers were so highly regarded that they were featured in the series "One Hundred Views of Osaka." The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has one in their collection (see photo for reference only), and it is cataloged there as follows: Peonies in Full Bloom in the Garden of Kichisuke, from the series One Hundred Views of Osaka (Naniwa hyakkei); Artist: Nansuitei Yoshiyuki (Japanese, 1835–1879);Publisher: Ishikawaya Wasuke (Ishiwa); Japanese Edo period, early 1860s You are buying the postcard, not the rare art print.
